Cosmetic surgery has come a long way and liposuction is the perfect example of this. Liposuction also known as lipoplasty, is a body contouring procedure that addresses troublesome and persistent body fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise. Liposuction is the top two cosmetic surgical procedure performed in the U.S. in 2015. This figure has grown 5 percent form 2014.
Areas that respond well to liposuction include: under the chin, the abdomen, the chest, the waist and love handles, the hips and thighs. The arms, back and knees can also be addressed with this technique.
It is important to realize that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Liposuction is used to sculpt these areas to smooth out the overall contours. Both men and women alike choose liposuction in our Toronto clinic to help them get rid of excess body fat deposits that stop them from looking and feeling their best.
There are many different types of liposuction techniques but the common technique is tumescent liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is commonly performed by injecting a special mixture of solution comprised of sterile water and medication. This special solution will numb the area to be treated for patient comfort, reduce blood loss and dissolve the fat to assist with easy removal of the body fat in the localized area.
During liposuction, the procedure is performed through tiny incisions and the special solution is injected into the area to be treated. Then a cannula (thin hollow tube) is inserted though the incision to manually break up the fat and suctioning the fat with a suction machine carrying the fat outside of the body. Most of the special solution injected will be suctioned out with the fat and the small amount remaining will be absorbed by the body and expelled.
You will experience swelling with fluid retention and bruising after liposuction. A special garment will be provided to you to wear after surgery. You will be required to wear this special garment under your clothes which gently compresses the surgical areas to help minimize swelling and bruising and speed recovery. You will be able to remove the garment to shower but will continue to wear it for a few weeks after surgery. Most patients are able to walk and move about the next day and return to their light activities after a week. This may vary depending the number of areas treated.
Once the fat in the localized areas are removed with liposuction, the fat loss is permanent. A healthy diet with exercise is highly encouraged. However, substantial weigh increase can affect this result.
Some of the risks associated with liposuction are asymmetry, uneven contouring, rippling of the skin, loose excessive skin and nerve damage. Serious complications from liposuction are extremely rare when it is performed by experienced certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Beber in Toronto clinic.
To be a good candidate for liposuction surgery, Dr. Beber recommends that you be within thirty percent of your ideal weight. If you smoke, you must stop smoking a month before you procedure and after your procedure.
During your consultation, Dr. Beber will examine you and work with you to decide the best course of action to address your specific areas of concern. Your new and improved body may be just a consultation away!
