Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy
Tap into the power of PRP to revitalize your skin and restore your hair.
The Science Behind PRP
PRP is a concentrated solution isolated from your whole blood that has been medically prepared to be enriched with plasma platelets and proteins. Your PRP contains platelets that contain growth factors and other healing compounds. These growth factors release the signaling cascades that give instructions to your tissue to begin healing and regeneration. This has led different areas of medicine to utilize PRP for wound healing to speed up recovery time and regrow healthier, stronger tissue.
Now doctors have discovered new benefits of PRP for skin rejuvenation and for hair thickening and regrowth.
For skin rejuvenation, PRP targets your collagen and elastin, the two key components in keeping your skin tone looking even and smooth. PRP can help treat dark circles, hollowing tear troughs in the under-eye areas, nasolabial folds, or marionette lines, crepey to mildly wrinkled skin on face, neck, chest, hands, and stretch marks.
When used in hair restoration in both men and women with thinning hair, your PRP will reduce hair loss and stimulate hair growth. PRP can stimulate inactive hair follicles into an active growth phase in those who have thinning hair, androgenic alopecia, or to maintain hair growth after hair-transplantation. Your growth factors and stem cells from your PRP work together to restore dormant hair follicles and jumpstarting the hair from its inactive phase into the growth stage.
PRP is safe and virtually carries no risk of allergic reaction or rejection because it comes from the patient’s own blood. It is very safe and has been used since 1970s for soft tissue, joint, and other surgical healing.
PRP can be safely combined with other treatments for skin rejuvenation like Botox or dermal fillers. For hair loss, it can be safely combined with Minoxidil and DHT blockers.
PRP is not indicated for deep wrinkles, laxity, and significant volume loss which may be more appropriate for surgical face lift procedures. PRP is not indicated for long standing baldness other than after hair transplant.
PRP is Rich in Growth Factors
A small sample of your own whole blood is drawn by a certified medical practitioner similar to what is required for a blood test. Then using an innovative and leading edge technology, your blood is prepared in a centrifuge to prepare a highly concentrated solution containing only the plasma rich in platelets and their growth factors.
The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is activated to release a large number of growth factors that are all well known to stimulate wound healing, tissue regeneration, and growth. Some of these growth factors include Epidermal Growth Factor, Transforming Growth Factor, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, Fibroblast Growth Factor, Collagen Stimulating Growth Factor etc.
These growth factors act instantly when activated. Therefore, PRP must be used immediately by your practitioner to your treatment areas. PRP will lose its efficacy if stored or not introduced into the target areas through injection or micro-needling immediately after preparation.
Facial Rejuvenation Using PRP
As an in office-treatment, our highly trained medical aesthetician can perform micro-needling with your own PRP. In addition, our highly skilled board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Beber or Dr. Zhong can inject PRP into specific facial areas that need more correction including, undereye hollow (tear trough) or nasolabial fold or Marionette lines. The micro-needling technique has been featured on episodes of The Doctors and can stimulate your own collagen by up to 1000%!
Once your blood has been drawn, it is centrifuged for 10 minutes to separate the serum rich platelets from the rest of the blood. We will apply the PRP onto the area to be treated on the face or neck, or other areas of the body. Using a micropen, we methodically introduce the PRP into your skin. Only by using this method, the PRP can be effectively deposited directly into the dermal layer of your skin where the regeneration and healing needs to take place.
Prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to minimize any discomfort. In addition, our centre can offer your own hand-held nitrous gas for pain relief and sedation for our patients who are seeking maximal comfort during the procedure. This can be purchased at our centre for a minimal fee.
Immediately after the treatment, the skin will appear rosy to red, depending on the depth of the treatment and the skin may feel tight and hot, resembling a sunburnt sensation. Depending on the individual and their skin sensitivity, there may be small amounts of punctate bleeding or minor scabbing. The following day, any redness will be reduced to a pale pink. The patient can wash the face and apply any mineral makeup they wish. There is minimal downtime involved. Most patients return to work, can exercise and enjoy a regular next day. Over the next 3-5 days, there may be mild to moderate peeling of the skin. Within days, the skin will appear smoother in texture and brighter and pores are visibly smaller. However real results in terms of plumper and tighter skin are not visible until about 4-8 weeks after the final treatment.
For anti-aging, the recommended number of treatments is 3 sessions performed 4-6 weeks apart. For scars, such as acne or stretch marks or surgical scars, the patient may require 3-6 treatments, about 6 weeks apart.
